Transport

Transport

People most often review carriers when something went wrong: the train was late, the bus left early, a scratch was found when the car was returned, the transfer driver didn't show up. That makes these reviews useful as a list of possible problems but poorly suited to an overall verdict. Below is what to look for in reviews of different kinds of transport, what really matters and what to check with the carrier itself. We don't name any companies.

A carrier answers to its own rules, not to other people's reviews. Read the rules first, and the reviews will make more sense.

Reviews of carriers

ModeWhat people look forWhat mattersWhat to check
TrainClean cars, working air conditioning, fellow passengers, on-time performanceImpressions depend heavily on the type of car and the time of yearTicket refund rules, baggage and pet policies, the departure station
BusPickup point, delays, stops along the way, seat comfortA review of an overnight trip says little about a daytime one, and vice versaThe exact pickup point on a map, baggage rules, what to do if you're late
Car rentalDisputes at return, the deposit, insurance, the car's conditionComplaints often come from not reading the contract carefullyContract terms, what counts as damage, how to document the car's condition at pickup
TransferBeing met at arrivals, waiting if the flight is delayed, driver courtesyA lot depends on whether the meeting time and place were given correctlyHow long the driver waits, how to reach them, who is responsible if the pickup falls through

How to read reviews about the journey

  • Look for reviews of your route and departure time, not of the carrier in general
  • Separate what depends on the carrier from what depends on the weather and the roads
  • Note recurring complaints and prepare for them in advance
  • Don't mistake other people's retellings for the rules: “they let me” doesn't mean they'll let you
  • Photograph the car at pickup and return so you don't have to argue from memory later
  • Keep confirmations, receipts and messages with the carrier until the trip is over
  • Routes

Three pre-trip checks, step by step: lodging in one evening, a tour or guide, and a carrier.

  • Planning

A step-by-step trip plan built on reviews: mistakes, backup options, a checklist and rental scams.

  • Local guide

How to write a useful trip review and avoid fake listings. Emergencies: 112 (or your local emergency number).
